Where to eat and drink in Northern Portugal
If there’s one thing Portugal does exceptionally well, it’s food and wine. From the freshest seafood to rich, slow-cooked stews, and from crisp Vinho Verde to bold Douro reds, every meal here feels like a celebration. But while the entire country boasts incredible culinary traditions, northern Portugal is the best part of it all—no debate. It's my favourite place in the country. Potentially my favourite place in the world.
Porto, with its bustling markets, historic cafés, and deep-rooted wine culture, is a dream for food lovers. The Douro Valley, home to some of the world’s most breathtaking vineyards, produces wines that rival any Old World classic. And coastal towns like Matosinhos serve up seafood so fresh, it practically jumps onto your plate.
Alas, here is my collection of where to eat, drink, and truly experience the magic of northern Portugal.
Casa da Chá Boa Nova - Matosinhos
Perched dramatically on the rocky coastline of Matosinhos, Casa da Chá Boa Nova is a two-Michelin-starred restaurant helmed by Chef Rui Paula that lives rent free in my head because it is hands down, THE BEST restaurant that I've ever dined at. Housed in an architectural masterpiece designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira, this restaurant seamlessly blends fine dining with the Atlantic Ocean and is seafood story (deeply rooted in sustainable sourcing practices). Expect an exquisite tasting menu that highlights the freshest seafood and local ingredients, all paired with an exceptional wine list.
DOP - Porto
Located in the heart of Porto, DOP (Degustar e Ousar no Porto) is another one of Chef Rui Paula’s restaurants. Set in a beautifully restored historic building, the restaurant delivers an elegant yet approachable dining experience, offering creative interpretations of traditional dishes using high-quality regional ingredients. IMO, Chef Rui Paula does seafood like no one else, so any seafood lover visiting Portugal should make an effort to get out to one of his spots. (He also has a restaurant called DOC in Douro Valley!)
Palato - Matosinhos
A hidden gem in Matosinhos, Palato is a local favorite known for its focus on fresh seafood and traditional Portuguese flavors with a modern twist. With a cozy yet sophisticated ambiance, the restaurant celebrates the region’s rich culinary heritage through dishes like perfectly grilled fish, octopus rice, and seafood stews, always served with warm hospitality.
The Door - Porto
NGL, I stumbled upon this spot when I googled "restaurants with food and espresso martinis in Porto". They delivered on both. The Door is a stylish and intimate cocktail and wine bar, The Door is an under-the-radar hotspot in Porto’s nightlife scene. Known for its expertly crafted cocktails, curated wine selection, and relaxed yet refined atmosphere, it’s a perfect place for a pre-dinner drink or a late-night gathering. The knowledgeable staff ensure a top-tier drinking experience with thoughtful recommendations tailored to your taste.
Culto ao Bacalhau - Porto
As the name suggests, Culto ao Bacalhau is a temple dedicated to Portugal’s beloved salted codfish, bacalhau. This Porto eatery elevates the national dish with a variety of preparations, from the classic Bacalhau à Brás to more inventive takes on the iconic ingredient. With a focus on quality and tradition, it’s a must-visit for those looking to experience the true essence of Portuguese cuisine. (Just make sure you like codfish if you're going here. It's in everything - even dessert!).

The wine bar offers a carefully curated selection of Portuguese wines in a cozy, contemporary setting. Whether you’re a connoisseur or a casual drinker, Prova promises an unforgettable wine experience.
Casa Triunfo - Porto
A paradise for tinned fish lovers, Casa Triunfo is a specialty shop in Porto that celebrates Portugal’s rich conservas tradition. Stocking a carefully curated selection of high-quality tinned seafood—from sardines and mackerel to octopus and tuna—alongside a stellar lineup of Portuguese wines. Carlos, the owner, is one of the coolest humans that I've ever met. Stop in to chat with him and you'll learn anything and everything you could possibly want to know about Portuguese specialty food items.
Mercado Municipal de Matosinhos
A bustling hub of fresh seafood, local produce, and authentic Portuguese flavors, Mercado Municipal de Matosinhos is the go-to destination for food lovers. Fishermen deliver their catch here from their boats on the dock less than a five minute walk away. Beyond the market stalls, you’ll also find small eateries who will cook up your choice of fish from the market - it's the literal definition of boat to plate! And everything is so reasonably priced
Conservas Pinhais - Matosinhos
One of Portugal’s most iconic fish canneries, Conservas Pinhais has been preserving high-quality sardines and other seafood since 1920. Offering guided tours that showcase the traditional, hand-packed process, this family-run factory is a fascinating glimpse into Portugal’s rich seafood heritage. A visit isn’t complete without picking up a few beautifully packaged tins—perfect as gourmet souvenirs or pantry staples.
ALIBI by Yours Porto
If you can snag a reservation for the open-air terrace, do it. This stylish restaurant and bar offer a fantastic mix of Mediterranean flavors with a focus on fresh seafood, creative cocktails, and an unbeatable atmosphere. The terrace is perfect for sunset drinks while overlooking Porto’s charming streets.
Cantinho de Avillez – Porto
Chef José Avillez is one of Portugal’s most famous chefs, and this is his new(ish) spot in Porto. Cantinho de Avillez is a more relaxed take on his fine dining concepts but still delivers incredibly refined Portuguese cuisine. If you love seafood, this is a must-visit. Expect beautifully plated, flavorful dishes and an exceptional wine selection.
And….a few bonus recommendations from trusted locals. ❤️

A market, wine bar, and restaurant all in one, Prado is a great spot in Porto for lunch. It focuses on seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, offering a mix of Portuguese and modern European flavors. Perfect for a slow, wine-fueled midday meal.
Base Porto
A really cool, modern public park with a kiosk café, Base Porto is a great place to grab a coffee, sip on a glass of wine, or just chill. It’s a popular spot among locals and visitors alike, offering a relaxing green space in the middle of the city.
Letraria Craft Beer – Porto
The best spot in Porto for good beers. This mostly local hangout spot has an impressive selection of craft brews, and the back patio is a hidden oasis. Whether you’re a beer aficionado or just looking for a break from all the wine, this is a great place to hang out.
