Get to know me

Hey, I’m Emily! I’m a fisheries scientist and content creator based in Canada. I started Seaside with Emily in 2015 as a platform to document my travels, food, and scuba diving adventures around the world. Today, Seaside with Emily has become the go-to resource for seafood lovers craving science-based insights and a deeper understanding of where their seafood comes from.

I’ve always had a passion for travel and food, and I knew from a very young age that I did not want to spend my life in a cubicle. So, I started writing about travel and food online in search of a more “unconventional” career path. 

While I snuck some convention in long enough to complete a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in fisheries science, I ultimately put them to use in the most unconventional of ways. Rather than continuing to publish papers and ride the academia cog, I hopped on a plane, jumped in a fish pen, and brought TikTok along for the ride.

And here we are now.

My Seafood Story

My family is from the Açores Islands; an autonomous region of Portugal, comprising 9 small islands in the Atlantic Ocean. Here, fish and seafood are a way of life.

Growing up in a Portuguese household, I’ve been surrounded by seafood my entire life, peeling shrimp since before I could even walk. Seafood has always been part of my personal and family identity; it’s what I expect at family gatherings, it’s the food I gravitate towards at restaurants, it’s influenced my travel decisions, and ultimately shaped my career trajectory.

I love crisp, high acid whites with light seafood dishes in the summer months. But in the winter…I’m getting wild and pairing rich seafood dishes with Pinot Noir all day long.

In the winter, I LOVE a warm pot of coconut curry mussels with french fries. But in the warmer months, I love fresh tuna tostadas or a fresh cup of ceviche.

favourite travel destination

Spain will always hold such a special place in my heart. It has everything that I could ever want; the ocean, culture, incredible food and wine, and fantastic nightlife.

favourite gameday snack

If I’m tailgating I love a good handheld, so I’m going lobster rolls. But if I’m watching the game at home, I love salmon devilled eggs and a creamy lobster dip. Always paired with a cold Bud Light. Always.
